A message from our CEO

The power of purpose gives us the ability to persevere — in the best of times, and the worst of times.

From wildfires and hurricanes to senseless violence, both the world and the CM Group family of companies faced bigger challenges during the past year than we’ve seen in the past decade.

Yet, we persevered. Our focus on the greater good, combined with our financial strength, gave us the ability to be there for our customers when they needed us most.

During the last several years, Church Mutual focused on building policyholders’ surplus to ensure we had resources to withstand significant challenges, such as those that unfolded in 2017. As a result, we were able to be there for our customers, just as we have been for the last 120 years.

In 2016, I reported results of more than $1.7 billion in assets and a policyholders’ surplus of $663.8 million. Today, I am pleased to report continued momentum. In 2017, our assets exceeded $1.8 billion and our policyholders’ surplus grew to more than $703.7 million.

The power of purpose also drove our charitable work in 2017. CM CARES™, the Church Mutual Insurance Company foundation, contributed to charitable, educational and religious causes that advanced the human condition.

I found the most profound demonstration of the power of purpose in the deep relationships we forged with our customers.

During the past year, we also continued our development of a more diverse and inclusive organization. Along with Chief Diversity Officer John Tribble, I was honored to connect with a group of global, intellectual, corporate, financial and political leaders at The London Conversations™ as we discussed how critical diversity is to the long-term growth of our company and the global economy. Together, we are working to affect positive change.

Above all of this, however, I found the most profound demonstration of the power of purpose in the deep relationships we forged with our customers. We were there through wildfires, flooding, hurricanes and other weather-related catastrophes. We also helped ensure the safety and security of our customers’ organizations and lent our hearts and hands as they recovered from senseless acts of violence.

Through all of the ups and downs, our purpose remained clear — support our customers, keep them safe and help them continue to serve others. This purpose will drive us for generations to come. Together, we can make the world a better place.

Sincerely,

Richard V. Poirier
